One of my pet peeves is when people say that a parent is “babysitting” their child. Even if one is not the primary care-giving parent, one never “babysits” one’s own child. It’s just called being a parent.
In a similar way, there’s really no such thing as “volunteering” at church. Because we are all a part of this community of faith, we don’t volunteer, we serve. That service is a part of our stewardship, our giving back, in this case, of our time and talents.
Erin Wathen writes about this in an article for Patheos. “I balk at the secular nature of what it means to volunteer. To volunteer means that you are an outside resource, stepping in to help an organization in need. Volunteering is what we do when we pick up trash at the park, or build a house with Habitat, or help sort food at the local food pantry. In other words, it’s what you do at a place that is important to you – but not at a place that belongs to you.”
Luther Memorial belongs to you.
There are a number of ministries at Luther Memorial in need of servants to give of their time and talent. Our Facilities and Maintenance Team needs folks who are handy with a hammer OR who wouldn’t mind being available to contact repair and maintenance folks when we have an issue that needs the professionals!
Our Worship and Music Team needs people to prepare and clean up after communion. This isn’t a complicated task, but it is a holy one. We provide lots of instruction and support and no special skills are needed.
We are also hoping that additional folks will serve as Assisting Ministers in worship. A training session is scheduled for October 13th after worship.
We always welcome those who’d like to serve as song leaders, ushers, or readers in worship as well.
We are asking for people to make coffee and provide snacks for our Sunday morning social hour.
Luther Memorial belongs to you.
I hope you’ll give some thought to where and how you’d like to offer your gifts and talents and time in service to this wonderful community we all call ours.
Grace and peace,
Pastor Julie Hutson +
