Commemoration of Mary Magdalene – July 22, 2012
This is the day that the Church remembers the life and ministry of Mary Magdalene. She has been called the apostle to the apostles. She was, after all, the first person Jesus sent to the eleven disciples with instructions to tell them that he was risen.

What an awful story we get from Mark’s Gospel today! It’s awful because of its gruesome nature, to be sure. The head of John the Baptist on a platter. Yuck. But more than that, it’s awful because of the complete lack of integrity or honor present within the story

There is a story told of a bishop who was interviewing a senior seminary student prior to their placement in a first call. “Where do you see yourself serving?” the bishop asked. The seminarian replied “Oh, just about anywhere except New Caanan.”
