Again Jesus spoke to them, saying, “I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will never walk in darkness but will have the light of life.” -John 8: 12
Jesus Christ is the light of the world, begins our Evening Prayer liturgy. And the response: The light no darkness can overcome.
On this last day of the year, I like to do an examen of the previous year, asking myself where I found myself closest to Christ and where I felt I was walking in darkness. Some people do an examen of each day; it is a meaningful, ancient practice.
I most often find that, in the dark places, it is the presence of Christ with me that sustains me. After all, when in a dark room, only one candle is needed to dispel the darkness.
In this new year, and in each new day, may we remember that in Christ we have the light of life.
